Cleaners Bloomsbury Health and Safety Policy
Cleaners Bloomsbury is committed to providing cleaning services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. We recognise our duty to comply with relevant health and safety legislation and to work to recognised industry best practice at all times. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across our cleaning operations.
Policy Aims and Objectives
Our primary aim is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health associated with cleaning tasks and environments. We will identify and control hazards, provide appropriate training and equipment, and foster a culture where health and safety are integral to all decisions and activities. We will regularly review our performance and seek continuous improvement.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Cleaners Bloomsbury holds overall responsibility for ensuring that effective health and safety arrangements are in place. Management will provide adequate resources to implement this policy and will ensure that health and safety considerations are embedded in planning, supervision and delivery of all cleaning contracts. Managers are responsible for conducting and updating risk assessments, implementing safe systems of work, monitoring compliance, and promptly addressing any identified shortcomings.
Employee Responsibilities
Every cleaner and member of staff has a legal and moral duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must follow all training, instructions, risk assessments and safe working procedures issued by Cleaners Bloomsbury. Staff are required to use equipment correctly, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, report hazards, defects, accidents, near misses and any concerns about health and safety without delay.
Client Responsibilities
We expect clients to provide safe access to their premises, to inform us of any site-specific risks and to cooperate with us in implementing necessary safety measures. This includes informing us of fragile surfaces, restricted areas, hazardous substances on site, security procedures, and any vulnerable persons present during cleaning activities. Collaboration between Cleaners Bloomsbury and clients is essential to ensure a safe working environment.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Cleaners Bloomsbury conducts suitable and proportionate risk assessments for all regular and one-off cleaning tasks. These assessments identify potential hazards such as slips and trips, manual handling, work at height, use of electrical equipment and exposure to cleaning chemicals. For each identified risk we will determine and implement appropriate control measures, which may include alternative methods, specialist tools, time restrictions, barrier systems or the use of safer products.
Safe systems of work are developed from these risk assessments and communicated clearly to all relevant staff. These are reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to the premises, equipment, working methods or legislation. Staff must adhere to these procedures at all times.
Use of Cleaning Chemicals
Cleaning chemicals and substances used by Cleaners Bloomsbury are selected with regard to both effectiveness and safety. We assess potential hazards associated with each product and ensure that only authorised, labelled containers are used. Staff receive training in safe dilution, application, storage and disposal of cleaning products.
Where reasonably practicable, less hazardous alternatives are chosen. Personal protective equipment, such as gloves or eye protection, will be provided when required by the product information or our own assessments. Chemicals will never be mixed unless specifically stated as safe by the manufacturer, and all products are kept out of reach of unauthorised persons, particularly children and pets in domestic environments.
Equipment Safety and Maintenance
All cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor machines, mops, buckets, extension poles and electrical tools, will be maintained in safe working order. Equipment is inspected regularly and removed from service immediately if any defect is found. Staff are trained to use equipment only for its intended purpose and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and company guidance.
Cables are routed to reduce the risk of trips, equipment is not overloaded, and only compatible accessories are used. Where work at height is required, such as cleaning high surfaces, only appropriate, stable equipment and methods approved by Cleaners Bloomsbury may be used.
Personal Protective Equipment and Uniform
Cleaners Bloomsbury supplies appropriate personal protective equipment where risk assessments show it is necessary. This may include gloves, masks, eye protection, aprons or other items depending on the task. Staff must wear and use the equipment as instructed and keep it in good condition. Any loss, damage or defect must be reported so it can be replaced promptly.
Clean and suitable clothing and footwear are required, including non-slip footwear where there is a risk of wet or polished floors. Uniforms, where provided, should be worn in accordance with company guidelines.
Housekeeping and Accident Prevention
Good housekeeping is central to maintaining safe environments. Cleaners Bloomsbury staff will use warning signs or barriers where floors are wet or where cables and equipment present a temporary hazard. Work areas should be kept as tidy as reasonably practicable, and spillages are to be dealt with promptly and safely.
All accidents, incidents and near misses are to be reported and recorded in line with company procedures. We will investigate the circumstances to identify root causes and implement appropriate corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Training, Supervision and Communication
All employees receive health and safety induction training and task-specific instruction before they work unsupervised. Ongoing training is provided when new equipment, chemicals or procedures are introduced, and periodically to refresh knowledge and reinforce safe behaviour. Supervisors monitor work practices, provide guidance and ensure that safety standards are maintained across all sites.
Open communication is encouraged. Staff are invited to raise suggestions for improving health and safety and to report any concerns without fear of reprisal. Health and safety information is communicated in a clear and accessible way to reflect the different environments in which we operate.
Wellbeing and Occupational Health
We recognise the physical nature of cleaning work and the potential for strains, fatigue or other health concerns. Cleaners Bloomsbury promotes safe manual handling techniques, realistic workloads and appropriate rest breaks in line with working arrangements. Where an employee reports a health condition that may affect their work, we will consider reasonable adjustments and seek professional advice where necessary.
Review of Policy
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed at regular intervals and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, locations or applicable legislation. Updated versions will be communicated to all staff and made available to clients on request. Our ongoing objective is to maintain a robust, practical and effective health and safety management system that supports safe, high-quality cleaning services throughout our service area.
